Our Favorite Bedtime Stories

The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton

The book is full of magical characters and wild adventures of 3 kids who live near a magical forest near their new home. This book was a gift from my beloved Mother-in-law. She read this to my husband as a child and has passed it on to my kids. It’s a long chapter book so probably better for anyone over 5yrs old. We read a chapter a night, and the kids love anticipating another exciting chapter.

Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak

My kids love the sillyness in this book. They choose this one whenever they are feeling extra crazy and want to hear me say crazy things! I love this book and how it’s not a story but a way to get small kids to engage with the words! This should be on everyone’s book shelf! And if your a fan of the T.V. show The Office it was written by one of the writer/actors on the show.

Press Here by Herve Tullet

Another interactive book similar to The Book with No Pictures, except instead of words you say, you do actions with the book to make things happen! This is a book my kids will read over and over and one of the few I love to repeat with them.

Should I share my Ice Cream by Mo Willems

We are BIG Elephant and Piggie fans in this house. In fact we are fans of Mo Willems in general. Both my older two saw the Elephant and Piggie play when it came to town a couple years ago, and since then we have checked out every Mo Willems book from both the school and public library. The series is about 2 friends with very different personalities and how they interact with each other and the world. They have very simple but dynamic dialog which both my girls LOVE to imitate until they fall in to fits of giggles. In fact these books were the first books both my girls memorized so they could ‘read’ by themselves!

One of Grain of Sand by Pete Seeger

This is one of my favorites for quiet time, its a sweet lullaby with beautiful pictures to go with it. I love reading it to the kids as they are all cuddled up and drifting off to sleep.

Goodnight Little One by Margaret Wise Brown

Another sweet book that walks you through different animals and their babies saying goodnight.

Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty

Such a cute story about a little girl using science to understand her world. This one is for my youngest, she’s determined to be a scientist when she grows up so anything that help advance that interest we grab it up and enjoy!
